Energy efficiency considerations for heat pumps and chimneys in residential buildings
When transitioning to heat pumps in older homes, efficiency depends on matching the system's power to the building's actual heat loss rather than the capacity of a previous gas boiler. Oversized heat pumps can lead to frequent cycling, which reduces efficiency and stresses the compressor. It is recommended to have a professional calculate heat input based on STN EN 12831-1 standards, especially if future insulation or window replacements are planned.
Furthermore, the existing radiator system affects performance. Heat pumps operate most efficiently at lower water temperatures, whereas older radiators may require higher temperatures to heat a room effectively. Ensuring adequate water flow through pipes and radiators is also critical for optimal operation.
Regarding modern chimney systems in passive houses, contemporary closed-circuit appliances do not compromise energy efficiency. These systems use a dedicated air supply circuit that does not extract oxygen from the room or interfere with central heat recovery systems. This prevents drafts and maintains the internal pressure and thermal comfort of highly efficient buildings.
