Energy efficiency developments in German and Italian heating networks

An analysis by Danfoss of 178 district heating networks in Germany indicates a theoretical waste heat potential of 30.4% of their total annual thermal requirement. This potential is based on the geographic proximity of industrial plants, data centers, supermarkets, and wastewater treatment facilities to the networks, which serve approximately 4.6 million households. While the data suggests a significant resource, Danfoss noted that technical and economic feasibility must be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Heat pumps may be utilized to raise temperatures for networks where available waste heat is too low.

In Italy, Acinque Energy Greenway has prepared its district heating network in Lecco for the upcoming thermal season starting October 15. The network currently serves 49 users, including 24 public buildings such as schools and social housing, as well as 25 private structures. The service covers Lecco, Valmadrera, and Malgrate. Infrastructure work is nearing completion, with specialized “pipe-pushing” technology being planned to install conduits under railway lines without disrupting train traffic.
