Home energy efficiency strategies for heating and insulation

Improving home heating efficiency involves a combination of structural maintenance, insulation, and behavioral adjustments. In poorly insulated homes, turning off heating systems at night may actually increase costs. This occurs because the system must work at maximum power to recover lost heat when temperatures drop significantly, a cycle that can cost up to 38 euros more per month in some cases.

Effective energy saving begins with addressing air leaks and insulation. Sealing gaps around attic openings, plumbing, and exterior doors with weatherstripping or caulk can prevent conditioned air from escaping. It is also critical to address moisture issues, such as roof leaks or damp crawl spaces, before adding new insulation to prevent mold growth.

Simple household modifications can also assist in heat retention. For example, placing aluminum foil behind radiators can act as a reflective barrier, preventing heat from being absorbed by exterior walls and instead bouncing infrared radiation back into the room. This method aims to reduce thermal waste in conventional buildings where walls often act as heat sinks.
