Energy costs and inflation impact households in Czech Republic and Slovakia

European and regional economic trends show significant pressure on households due to energy costs and inflation. The European Commission has introduced the Citizens Energy Package (CEP) to lower energy bills, strengthen consumer rights, and promote energy communities by facilitating electricity sharing from local renewable sources.

In the Czech Republic, energy poverty remains a critical issue, affecting over one million people. Vulnerable groups, including low-income families with children and single seniors, are particularly at risk as rising fuel and electricity prices threaten to increase the number of households unable to afford basic heating and utilities. Inflation in the Czech Republic has seen a recent uptick to 2.5%, driven largely by rising fuel costs linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

In Slovakia, retail sales show modest growth, though consumer spending remains constrained by consolidation measures and high fuel prices. To mitigate rising costs, various solutions are being promoted, ranging from technical upgrades like heat accumulation tanks and modern roof windows to service offerings from providers like ČEZ, which now offers free boiler maintenance to help reduce gas consumption.
