Energy efficiency tips for electric kettles and rice cookers

Household energy consumption patterns for electric kettles and rice cookers can significantly impact annual utility costs. For electric kettles, data from the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy suggests that unplugging the device and re-boiling water when needed can save approximately 3,330 yen per year compared to continuous warming, provided the device is not used for at least six hours. However, the Kanto Electric Power Safety Corporation notes that for periods shorter than two hours, continuous warming may actually be more efficient than re-boiling.

Regarding rice cookers, maintaining rice at optimal quality is typically best within a three-to-four-hour window. Prolonged warming can lead to dryness, yellowing due to the Maillard reaction, and changes in texture. While some advanced models use temperature control and steam to mitigate these effects, freezing cooked rice for later reheating in a microwave is often recommended as a superior method for preserving both taste and moisture over long periods.
