Energy experts discuss cost-effective air conditioning use
Energy advisor Álex Bermúdez suggests that running air conditioning overnight in Spanish households can cost as little as 45 cents, which may be less than the price of a morning coffee. Experts note that the actual cost depends on several variables, including the efficiency of the equipment, electricity tariffs, home insulation, and external temperatures.
To optimize energy use, Bermúdez recommends setting thermostats between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius, noting that every degree below this range can increase consumption by 6% to 8%. In France, the agency ADEME suggests not dropping below 26 degrees Celsius, stating that increasing the temperature from 23 to 26 degrees can reduce cooling needs by two-thirds.
Technicians highlight that modern inverter technology allows units to scale down motor speed once a target temperature is reached, rather than constantly switching on and off at full power. Consequently, experts advise against frequently turning the unit off and on, as maintaining a stable climate with an inverter system is often more efficient than repeatedly cooling a reheated room.
