Energy Fuels secures Japanese approval for Utah-produced terbium oxide

Energy Fuels has announced that its terbium oxide, produced at the White Mesa Mill in Utah, has successfully passed all qualifications for use by one of the world’s largest manufacturers of rare earth permanent magnets based in Japan. The approval means the material meets all commercial specifications and requires no further validation before being used in production.

Terbium is a strategically critical rare earth element used to enhance the heat resistance and performance of neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets. These magnets are essential components in electric vehicles, robotics, aerospace systems, defense equipment, and advanced electronics.

This milestone is part of an effort to establish a diversified Western supply chain for critical materials, reducing reliance on Chinese suppliers. Terbium oxide is highly valuable due to its scarcity; Benchmark Mineral Intelligence estimates its market price at approximately $5.5 million per tonne in Europe. Energy Fuels has previously secured qualifications for other key magnet materials, including neodymium-praseodymium oxide and dysprosium oxide.
