Latin American energy sectors face infrastructure gaps and new investments
Latin American nations are addressing diverse energy challenges, ranging from infrastructure deficits to new renewable investments. In Honduras, ENEE manager Guillermo Peña Panting reported that while the electrical system is currently meeting 100% of demand, the country faces a 15-year backlog in transmission infrastructure and a critical need to replace expensive diesel-based generation. Labor unions have warned that citizens are suffering from frequent blackouts and rationing due to these systemic issues.
In Ecuador, authorities have approved a $277.7 million transmission project to connect with Peru, aimed at providing an energy backup during drought periods. Meanwhile, in Chile, Solar Antofagasta has advanced environmental permits for a $593 million solar project in the Antofagasta region, which includes battery storage capabilities.
Other regional developments include the expansion of a solar park in Formosa, Argentina, to 37 megawatts, and discussions in Panama regarding the need for increased investment in the national transmission grid to prevent costly delays.
