Energy market volatility impacts electricity prices and nuclear sector investments

Wholesale electricity prices are experiencing a significant surge, creating uncertainty for households and businesses ahead of winter. In Greece, the average wholesale price reached 224.57 euros per megawatt-hour, with a 3.5% increase over the last 13 days. This trend is driven by a reduced share of renewable energy in the energy mix and a return to conventional fuels. Natural gas currently accounts for 39.87% of the energy mix, while renewables stand at 37.10%.

Global natural gas prices have risen due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which have impacted liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. These disruptions have potentially blocked approximately 60 billion cubic meters of supply, representing about 20% of Europe's annual demand. Low storage levels further exacerbate the crisis.

In the nuclear sector, despite massive investments from technology giants to power AI data centers, many nuclear-related stocks have faced heavy losses. Companies developing new technologies, such as NuScale Power, Oklo, and Nano Nuclear Energy, have seen significant declines in market value over the past year. However, strategic partnerships continue, such as the agreement between Oklo and Meta Platforms to develop a 1.2 GW nuclear energy complex in Ohio to support AI infrastructure.
