Energy markets in Brazil and Spain expand consumer choice

Energy markets in Brazil and Spain are undergoing regulatory shifts to increase consumer choice and competitiveness.

In Brazil, the Free Energy Market (ACL) allows eligible consumers connected to medium and high voltage (Group A) to negotiate prices, quantities, and terms directly with generators or traders. While local distributors remain responsible for maintaining the physical grid, consumers can bypass the Regulated Contracting Environment (ACR) to seek better commercial conditions. For consumers with loads under 500 kW, participation is facilitated through retail agents who manage transactions with the Electric Energy Trading Chamber (CCEE).

In Spain, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has opened a public consultation regarding the operational framework for independent electricity aggregators. This new structure would allow households to contract with multiple suppliers simultaneously, with different companies managing different time slots of the day to optimize costs. The aggregator manages consumption patterns to reduce peak demand and is remunerated for providing this flexibility, without acting as the primary energy supplier.
