Peru energy and mining sectors report significant growth in 2026

Peru's energy and mining sectors showed significant activity in the first half of 2026. According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), electricity generation in the southern region grew by 25%, reaching 6,598 GWh. Arequipa led this growth with an 81% increase, followed by Puno at 74% and Moquegua at 42%. While Lima remains the country's primary generating region with 12,731 GWh, the southern surge highlights shifting regional dynamics.

In the mining sector, MINEM authorized over US$ 3.067 billion in new investments across 150 projects between January and August 2026. Key projects include Zafranal in Arequipa and Antapaccay and Constancia in Cusco. Minister Guillermo Shinno noted that mining accounts for 9.1% of Peru's GDP and 67.8% of total exports, serving as a primary driver of national economic growth.
