Energy Poverty Affects Over 5,000 Households in Dutch Cities Roermond and Zoetermeer

New CBS and TNO figures show that more than 2,000 households in Roermond are classified as energy‑poor, representing about 7 % of the municipality. In the Donderberg district the share rises to 14 %, and the affected families spend roughly €650 a year more on energy than they can afford. Around 3,900 additional single‑person households earn just enough to cover their bills but remain vulnerable to any income drop.

In the neighbouring city of Zoetermeer the number of energy‑poor households has risen again, now exceeding 3,000 for the third consecutive year. The problem is linked to low incomes and poorly insulated homes, which keep energy costs high throughout the year. Nationwide, almost half a million Dutch households face similar difficulties. Municipalities and NGOs are urging insulation improvements and offering advice or financial aid where possible, while the national emergency fund is set to return next winter after being suspended during the recent gas price surge.
