Energy poverty concerns rise in La Rioja as heating costs increase

In La Rioja, Spain, rising energy costs are driving a debate over heating methods as winter approaches. Approximately 42,000 people in the region face energy poverty, unable to maintain adequate home temperatures. Data from the European Network Against Poverty indicates that 7% of the La Rioja population is already experiencing delays in utility bill payments.

Families are reportedly forced to choose between heating their homes and purchasing food. Javier Porres, director of the Cocina Económica de Logroño, noted that some families avoid collecting dry foods because they lack the gas necessary for cooking, leading the organization to provide pre-cooked meals in jars instead.

As an alternative to gas, firewood is seeing increased demand due to its lower cost. Local vendors report that wood is becoming a more economical option for households facing high annual heating expenses.
