Energy prices rise as butane gas costs increase in Spain and Portugal
Butane gas prices are experiencing upward pressure in the Iberian Peninsula due to geopolitical instability in the Middle East and rising raw material costs.
In Spain, the price for a traditional 12.5 kg butane cylinder is set at 18.84 euros for October 2026. The Spanish government has established an extraordinary maximum price of 19.55 euros for this format, effective until June 30, 2027, to protect consumers. The current rate reflects a 1.01 euro increase compared to July, driven by higher commodity prices and transport costs.
In Portugal, consumer advocacy group Deco Proteste warns that the average price for a 13 kg butane cylinder could reach 40 euros by the end of the year. Data from the Energy Services Regulatory Entity (ERSE) shows the average price exceeded 37.50 euros in October, up from 34.11 euros at the start of the year. Approximately 2.1 million Portuguese households rely on bottled gas for essential needs. Deco Proteste is calling for a reduction in the VAT rate for bottled and piped gas from 23% to 6% to alleviate the financial burden on families.
