Energy prices surge, impacting rural households in the UK and US

Rising energy and heating oil prices are placing significant financial strain on households in rural areas of the United Kingdom and the Hudson Valley region of the United States.

In the UK, approximately 1.5 million people living outside the mains gas network rely on heating oil. Because the heating oil market is unregulated, global supply disruptions—driven by the war in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East—are passed directly to consumers. Prices have seen significant volatility, with some users reporting costs nearly doubling compared to previous years, forcing retirees and small business owners to draw from savings to cover winter heating needs.

Similarly, residents in the Hudson Valley are facing increased costs for electricity, natural gas, gasoline, and heating oil. Local heating oil prices have reportedly reached $5.99 per gallon, with monthly bills projected to exceed $750 during winter. International conflicts and sanctions on Russian petroleum exports have contributed to this volatility. In response to these pressures, programs such as the Energy Assistance Program are being utilized to help eligible low-income residents manage utility expenses.
