Energy production faces shortages in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia

Energy production and stability face challenges in the Balkan region due to fuel shortages and infrastructure damage. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Elektroprivreda BiH (EPBiH) reported a significant production deficit. The company produced approximately 4,808.6 GWh in 2025, falling short of its original targets by 1,452.4 GWh. This shortfall was driven by a lack of coal deliveries from its own mines—which provided 1.01 million tons less than contracted—and poor coal quality. Consequently, EPBiH had to purchase additional electricity from the market to meet domestic demand.

In Serbia, the Kostolac thermal power plant experienced a fire at its A2 block, which had recently completed maintenance. The fire destroyed components of an air heater, causing significant damage to internal structures and sealing systems. The outage is estimated to cost Serbia between 420,000 and 750,000 euros per day in lost production, depending on market prices. The A2 block accounts for approximately 4.5 percent of the country's total electricity production, a critical loss during periods of high demand and drought.
