Energy production threatened by high temperatures and low rainfall

High temperatures and a lack of rainfall are placing significant pressure on the national energy system. Low water levels in reservoirs and weak river flows are expected to directly impact electricity production, particularly from hydroelectric plants.

Energy expert Konstandin Dimitrov notes that while the country possesses considerable theoretical production capacity, much of the infrastructure is aging. Thermal power plants such as Manastir, Osllomej, and Negotinë, along with various hydroelectric facilities, are unable to operate at their predicted capacities due to their declining lifespan. Dimitrov emphasized that these facilities require urgent replacement with modern equipment.

While the growth of photovoltaic capacity has increased energy supply and could potentially lower market prices, the varying costs between ESM and private producers remain a factor. Continued high temperatures and drought conditions may persist in the coming months, creating upward pressure on electricity prices depending on international market movements and import/export capabilities.
