Energy projects face delays and cancellations in Vietnam and Australia

Major energy infrastructure projects in Vietnam and Australia are facing significant setbacks. In Quang Ninh, Vietnam, a $2 billion LNG gas-to-power plant project has failed to begin construction despite the completion of land clearance for over 41 hectares. The 1,500MW facility, intended to supply 9 billion kWh of electricity annually to the national grid, is currently stalled due to unresolved issues regarding power purchase agreements, gas supply, and equipment procurement, as well as pending procedures for sea reclamation.

In Australia, Alinta Energy has cancelled the Oven Mountain pumped hydro project in New South Wales. The project, valued at approximately 1.8 billion AUD (32.7 trillion VND), was designed with a 900MW capacity to serve over 600,000 households. The developer cited economic difficulties and transmission infrastructure challenges as the primary reasons for the cancellation, noting that the costs and timelines made the project unfeasible compared to evolving energy storage technologies.
