Energy providers meet in Schwerin to discuss grid security and AI

Representatives from 12 municipal utilities and grid operators met in Schwerin to discuss modernizing energy supply and enhancing infrastructure resilience. The discussions focused on protecting critical infrastructure against recent attacks seen in Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as the role of artificial intelligence in accelerating the energy transition.

Netzgesellschaft Schwerin GmbH reported on the rollout of smart metering systems, noting that 80 MW of renewable energy capacity is currently connected, with an additional 57 MW in planning. Due to the increasing number of wind and solar installations and rising customer demand, WEMAG Netz GmbH projects a significant increase in grid expansion investment, forecasting costs to rise from approximately 100 million euros this year to 216 million euros by 2028.
