Energy Regulatory Commission tightens electric meter approval rules

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has implemented stricter regulations regarding electric meters used for consumer billing. Under Resolution No. 29, Series of 2026, all meter types intended for revenue metering must obtain ERC approval before being utilized by distribution utilities, microgrid system providers, and redistributors.

The new framework establishes uniform evaluation requirements to strengthen regulatory oversight and minimize billing discrepancies. Approved meter types will be issued a Certificate of Approval for Meter Type (CA-MT), which is generally valid for a non-extendable 10-year period. The rules provide a defined processing timeline for applications and will apply to new activities once they take effect. Existing meters in service and current certificates will remain valid under specific transition provisions.
