Argentina markets face volatility amid energy sector divergence

Argentine financial markets are experiencing significant volatility and a downward trend in August. The S&P Merval index has faced corrections, with some sessions seeing drops of up to 1.8%, while the country risk index has climbed toward 480 basis points.

Despite the broader market decline, the energy sector remains a notable outlier. Companies such as YPF and Vista have seen substantial growth, with YPF and Vista accumulating gains exceeding 56% in dollars over the last twelve months, driven by production plans in Vaca Muerta. However, the banking sector has faced heavy selling pressure.

On the industrial side, reports indicate a contraction in the business landscape, with over 30,000 companies reportedly lost since November due to economic adjustments, reduced domestic consumption, and rising costs. Investors remain cautious, influenced by political uncertainty and potential shifts in government policy.
