Energy sector sees divergence as gas demand stays firm while renewables face pressure
The energy sector is experiencing a divergence between traditional fossil fuels and renewable energy projects. Baker Hughes CEO Lorenzo Simonelli reports that high interest rates have not slowed investment in large energy projects, citing strong demand driven by population growth, industrial needs, and the expansion of data centers for artificial intelligence.
Simonelli noted that LNG capacity may need to reach 900 million tons per year by 2035 to meet future demand. He characterized natural gas not merely as a transition fuel, but as a “destination fuel.”
Conversely, a report from Allianz Trade indicates that renewable energy projects, such as solar and wind, are facing increased financial pressure. While oil and gas companies maintain robust cash flows, renewable sectors are struggling with rising capital costs, grid connection difficulties, and market price volatility. Despite these challenges, producers in the United States, Qatar, and Australia continue to expand LNG infrastructure to serve European and Asian markets.
