Energy sector updates in Moldova and Romania

In Moldova, Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu visited the Garma-Grup enterprise in Hâncești to discuss expanding biogas-based electricity production. The company utilizes a circular economy model, converting organic waste from cattle farms and industrial byproducts into biogas for technological needs and electricity generation via cogeneration. Additionally, the company is conducting a pilot project using sweet sorghum as a potential raw material for bioethanol production.

In Romania, former State Secretary Andrei Maioreanu has criticized the government's decision to delay the closure of lignite-based power plants in Turceni and Craiova. Maioreanu characterized the move as a postponement rather than a rescue of energy capacities, accusing politicians of hypocrisy for supporting coal closures in the past and now claiming credit for maintaining production. The government has extended the operation of the Craiova 1 and 2 groups until the end of the second quarter of 2027, along with Turceni group 5.
