Energy security and hydrogen potential discussed in Bavaria

Energy experts in Bavaria are discussing the future of gas and hydrogen as the region navigates energy transitions. Marcus Böske, head of Energie Südbayern (ESB), stated that while gas storage levels are historically low, particularly in Bavaria, a normal winter should not cause supply concerns. He noted that household customers are a protected group, though he cautioned that extreme cold or sabotage could pose risks.

ESB is also shifting its business model, aiming for half of its profits to come from non-fossil sources, such as heat networks and photovoltaics, by 2032.

In a related regional development study, OTH Amberg-Weiden researchers analyzed the potential for a cross-border hydrogen economy between Germany and the Czech Republic. The HyBaBo project suggests that hydrogen will play a vital role in heavy-duty transport, municipal mobility, and industrial processes requiring temperatures above 1,000 degrees Celsius, such as glass manufacturing, where electrification is not always feasible.
