Energy shifts: Bumech sues Polish State and coal overtakes gas in Bangladesh
In Poland, the company Bumech, owner of the Silesia Mining Enterprise, has filed a lawsuit against the State Treasury seeking 5 billion PLN in damages. The claim stems from a 2022 government decision to implement interventionist coal imports to secure winter supplies during the energy crisis. Bumech argues these actions, directed at companies such as PGE Ciepło and Węglokoks, disrupted market competitiveness. The company also intends to file a complaint with the European Commission.
Separately, energy trends in Bangladesh indicate a significant shift in the global LNG outlook. For the first time this summer, electricity production from coal surpassed production from gas in the country. In July, coal-fired generation reached 3.92 TWh, compared to 3.66 TWh from gas-fired plants. This marks a major departure for a nation where gas previously accounted for over 90 percent of electricity supplies, serving as a potential warning sign for global LNG investors.
