Energy stability efforts focus on renewables in Cuba and reserve management in Puerto Rico
In Villa Clara, Cuba, authorities and non-state entities are increasing investments in renewable energy to mitigate fuel shortages and stabilize the electrical grid. Efforts include installing solar panels in high-consumption institutions, public lighting in parks and avenues, and establishing charging stations in residential neighborhoods. Armando Hernández, director of ONURE in the province, stated that prioritizing these alternatives is essential to maintaining daily life despite petroleum restrictions.
In Puerto Rico, Genera PR Vice President of Government and Public Affairs, Iván Báez, warned that energy reserves are thin for the remainder of the summer. While the system has added approximately 1,200 megawatts of capacity, peak demand periods leave reserves as low as 100 megawatts, whereas a safer margin would be at least 700 megawatts. Báez noted that federal energy department funds of over $200 million are being invested in repairs and infrastructure to stabilize the system.
