Energy storage advancements target supply chain security and grid stability

General Motors is advancing the development of sodium-ion battery cells intended for stationary energy storage systems (ESS). In partnership with startup Peak Energy, GM aims to begin commercial manufacturing by 2029. This strategic move is designed to domesticate supply chains within the United States and reduce reliance on China for critical raw materials like lithium and ferrous sulfate. While the immediate focus is on stationary applications for households, businesses, and data centers, GM is also evaluating the technology for future electric vehicle fleets.

Separately, XL Batteries and ENEOS Holdings have entered a memorandum of understanding to develop organic flow battery technology for large-scale, long-duration grid storage. Unlike traditional batteries, this flow battery architecture uses proprietary, abundant, and non-toxic organic electrolytes stored in external tanks. The collaboration aims to address the increasing demand for grid stability caused by electrification and the rise of data centers, providing a solution for balancing supply and demand from renewable energy sources.
