Energy storage solutions tackle grid congestion in the Netherlands

Innovative energy storage solutions are being implemented in the Netherlands to mitigate grid congestion and manage peak loads in infrastructure and construction projects.

At the renovated Cruquiusbrug in North Holland, supercapacitors have been installed to handle power spikes during the opening and closing of the bridge. Because expanding the existing grid connection was not a realistic option, these supercapacitors act as a buffer, absorbing energy during movement and discharging it when needed. This system has reduced peak grid load by approximately 40 percent.

In the Fabriekskwartier development, the BatteREstore project is repurposing used automotive batteries to provide electricity for construction site cranes. By charging the batteries from the grid at night and using them during the day, the project reduces reliance on diesel generators and alleviates pressure on the local electricity network. This approach aims to prevent housing construction delays caused by limited grid capacity while promoting circularity through battery reuse.
