Energy strategies in Texas and Greece address rising electricity demand

As global electricity demand surges due to the expansion of data centers and electric vehicles, different regions are adopting distinct strategies to manage costs and supply.

Texas serves as a case study for rapid capacity expansion. Despite being a major hub for oil and gas, the state has become a leader in solar, wind, and battery storage. By utilizing fast interconnection processes and dynamic pricing, Texas has managed to add new power capacity quickly while maintaining relatively low costs for consumers. The model relies on renewables for growth while maintaining natural gas as a backup.

In Greece, the Ministry of Environment and Energy has outlined a plan to reduce retail electricity prices by 30% between 2027 and 2029. This strategy involves 5 billion euros in funding through the Social Climate Fund, the Islands Fund, and the Escape Clause. Key initiatives include investments in renewable energy, energy storage, and the interconnection of islands. Additionally, the plan aims to reduce non-technical losses and overdue debts through the use of smart meters and increased energy efficiency for households and public buildings.
