Energy subsidies and fuel tax exemptions implemented in Argentina and Guatemala

In Argentina, the government has established a reimbursement program for 10-kilogram gas cylinders. Eligible households must register through the Registro de Subsidios Energéticos Focalizados (ReSEF). The subsidy provides a reimbursement of $9,593 per cylinder, with coverage varying between one unit per month in summer and two units during winter. Consumers are advised to verify their registration and the specific payment methods used at participating businesses to ensure the benefit is correctly applied.

In Guatemala, the temporary exemption of Value Added Tax (IVA) and the Petroleum and its Derivatives Distribution Tax (IDP) for gasoline and diesel took effect on October 1, 2026. Following the implementation, the Dirección de Atención y Asistencia al Consumidor (Diaco) has launched investigations into reports of service stations failing to issue proper invoices or apply the tax exemptions. Many issues appear to stem from gas stations failing to update their billing systems with the Superintendencia de Administración Tributaria (SAT). Invoices must clearly indicate the applied exemptions so consumers can verify the tax benefit has been passed on to the fuel price.
