Energy transition demands real-time data and resilient infrastructure
The global transition toward renewable energy is driving an urgent need for more flexible, digital, and resilient electrical grids. As extreme weather events and rising demand put pressure on existing systems, experts emphasize that managing complex energy flows requires advanced real-time data infrastructure.
In Europe, extreme temperatures and the variability of wind and solar power are challenging grid stability. The need to coordinate decentralized sources—such as residential solar panels, electric vehicles, and industrial batteries—requires real-time connectivity to prevent imbalances. A previous blackout affecting Spain and Portugal in April 2025 highlighted the operational difficulties of maintaining stability in highly interconnected systems.
In Colombia, the combination of growing energy demand and the El Niño phenomenon is accelerating the push for infrastructure modernization and energy storage. While renewable energy now accounts for 13.8% of the national energy matrix, the system remains heavily dependent on hydroelectric power, which constitutes approximately 62% of installed capacity. This reliance makes the grid particularly vulnerable to prolonged droughts caused by climate patterns.
