Energy transition planning and residential efficiency grants announced in Greece and Cyprus
Dimitris Fourlaris, Vice President of the Energy Sector at RAAEY, has called for a shift in how energy investments are planned and evaluated. Speaking at the Franco-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he warned that treating production, networks, storage, interconnections, and consumption as separate investment fields will increase the overall cost of the energy transition.
Fourlaris emphasized that success should no longer be measured solely by installed megawatts, but by economic efficiency and consumer benefit. He highlighted the importance of the Greece-Cyprus interconnection, noting that the entry of Meridiam could accelerate its implementation. He argued that strategic investments must solve critical constraints, such as reducing congestion and utilizing energy that would otherwise be lost.
In Cyprus, the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry has announced a €20 million grant scheme titled ‘Save – Upgrade Residences (2026)’. Part of the ‘THALEIA 2021-2027’ program and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, the scheme supports residential investments in thermal insulation, window replacement, solar water heating, heat pumps, photovoltaic systems, and energy storage batteries. Applications will be accepted via an electronic system starting October 20, 2026.
