Energy transition strategies for building renovations in Germany

New research and technical insights highlight evolving strategies for building decarbonization and energy management in Germany.

A whitepaper from the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy Technology (IEE), developed in collaboration with Daikin, addresses challenges in retrofitting multi-family homes with heat pumps. The report identifies that inconsistent standards and load calculations can lead to significant discrepancies in construction cost subsidies, ranging from zero to over 50,000 euros. Key issues include non-uniform regulations regarding standard grid connection capacities and the potential for certain DIN standards to overestimate actual power requirements by up to a factor of 2.5.

Additionally, technical trends suggest that combining electric direct heating with photovoltaic systems is becoming a practical solution for energy-efficient renovations and new constructions. By integrating electricity and heat as a unified system, property owners can better leverage solar energy to meet heating demands.
