Energy Vault secures approval for Stoney Creek battery project in Australia
The New South Wales Government has granted State Significant Development Approval for the Stoney Creek Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) located near Narrabri. Owned by Energy Vault and developed by Enervest, the project features a 125MW/1GWh capacity designed to provide eight hours of dispatchable storage.
The facility will connect to Transgrid’s existing Narrabri substation to support grid reliability and the integration of renewable energy sources. The project is supported by a 14-year Long-Term Energy Service Agreement (LTESA) awarded through AEMO Services under the New South Wales Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap.
Community and social commitments include a AUS$420,000 community development fund and AUS$1.05 million in Indigenous Services Support over 14 years. The project also aims to provide opportunities for local businesses, apprenticeships, and First Nations employment. Commercial operations are scheduled to commence in 2028.
