EnergyAustralia breaches Australian free electricity offer

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) accepted a court‑enforceable undertaking from EnergyAustralia after the retailer admitted it failed to provide the mandatory Solar Sharer Offer by the July 1 deadline. The offer, which gives eligible households three hours of free electricity during the day, was only launched on August 3, denying customers the chance to shift usage to peak solar output periods.

EnergyAustralia, owned by Hong‑Kong‑listed CLP Holdings, has committed to comply with the Electricity Retail Code, train staff on the scheme and publish clear information for consumers. ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey highlighted the breach, and Energy Minister Chris Bowen noted the plan’s role in easing power‑bill pressure. The retailer previously faced a $14 million Federal Court fine for similar violations.
