Enes Kanter announces intention to join 2027 WNBA Draft

Former NBA player Enes Kanter has announced his intention to participate in the 2027 WNBA Draft, stating that he identifies as a woman. Kanter, who is wanted by Turkish authorities in connection with a FETÖ investigation, claimed on social media that he meets all the necessary requirements to play in the women’s league.

Kanter’s announcement coincides with a broader debate regarding transgender athletes in women's sports. He noted that while WNBA rules specify the league is for women, they do not explicitly exclude transgender women. He emphasized that his actions are not intended to mock any community or personal preferences.

Another former NBA player, Royce White, also expressed plans to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft, stating to Fox News, “When it comes to basketball, sometimes I identify as a woman.”

The WNBA released a statement noting that while its collective bargaining agreement specifies the league is for “women,” there is currently no urgent player eligibility issue affecting the league. The organization also stated it strongly condemns attempts to use these issues to demean or marginalize others.
