WNBA faces controversy over transgender participation protests

The WNBA is facing intense scrutiny following protests by former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, who have declared their intention to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft as a protest against the league's transgender participation policies. Kanter Freedom was recently banned from Wintrust Arena after a confrontation at a Chicago Sky game where he wore a shirt defining womanhood. White also drew attention by attending an Indiana Fever game wearing a blonde wig to support his campaign.

Professional players have reacted strongly to these actions. Los Angeles Sparks center Cameron Brink criticized Kanter Freedom, calling him a “stupid piece of sh-t” and accusing him of using the trans community for “clickbait” and views. Chicago Sky's Natasha Cloud dismissed him as an “irrelevant person.” Conversely, former NBA star Charles Barkley expressed support for the views of Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who has advocated for protecting female sporting categories.

Enes Kanter Freedom has proposed a “peace summit” to discuss these issues with WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, suggesting Caitlyn Jenner moderate the discussion. While the WNBA has described transgender participation as a “complex and nuanced” issue, league sources indicate that both Kanter Freedom and White are currently considered ineligible for the draft.
