Enfield, Sydney, enters biosecurity lockdown due to fire ant discovery

A biosecurity control order has been implemented for the Sydney suburb of Enfield following the discovery of red fire ants at the Enfield Intermodal Logistics Centre in late September. The lockdown covers a two-kilometre radius around the facility.

The invasive pests, believed to have been imported via an overseas shipping container, pose a significant threat to agriculture, native wildlife, and human health due to their painful stings. The Invasive Species Council has warned that the spread of these ants could cost the Australian economy up to $2 billion annually.

New South Wales Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty stated that while daily life for residents will continue as normal, strict restrictions apply to the movement of high-risk materials. This includes turf, mulch, soil, potted plants, and heavy equipment. Businesses must properly treat and handle these materials before they can be moved out of the zone. The control order is currently set for a six-month period, subject to review.
