Engine oil selection requires specific manufacturer standards
Automotive maintenance practices and the complexity of engine oil selection are becoming increasingly critical due to evolving engine technologies. In Japan, a preventive maintenance philosophy often leads to much shorter oil change intervals, sometimes as frequent as every 5,000 km, to ensure engine longevity and avoid breakdowns. This approach contrasts with European standards, which often favor longer intervals.
Furthermore, experts from TotalEnergies note that selecting the correct oil has become more complex. Relying solely on viscosity ratings like 0W-20 or 5W-30 is no longer sufficient. Modern engine features—such as turbocharging, direct injection, hybrid systems, and particulate filters—require specific oil formulations. Consequently, adhering to specific manufacturer approvals (OEM specifications) and homologations is essential, as two oils with identical viscosity may have entirely different additive packages and intended uses.
