Marcelo de Oliveira Rocha dies after being beaten in Santos
Environmental engineer and Unifesp master's student Marcelo de Oliveira Rocha has died following a violent assault in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo. The incident occurred during a political event supporting the re-election of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
According to reports, Rocha was participating in a musical performance by Banda Esquerdantina when he stepped away to use a restroom around 3:00 AM on Saturday, October 24. He was later found unconscious by friends near the intersection of Avenida Conselheiro Nébias and Rua Henrique Ablas. Witnesses and security footage indicate that a group of at least seven men surrounded and attacked him, subsequently stealing his mobile phone and other belongings.
Rocha was initially treated by SAMU and taken to Santa Casa de Santos before being transferred to the Hospital São Paulo (Unifesp) in the capital, where he remained in a coma. His death was confirmed following the onset of brain death. While the Civil Police are investigating the circumstances and the identity of the perpetrators, the crime was initially registered as robbery resulting in serious bodily injury.
Although the official motive has not been confirmed by authorities, the victim's family and members of Banda Esquerdantina have expressed suspicions that the attack may have been motivated by homophobia and Rocha's political stance.
