Engineer Joseph Muturi Mugu disputes responsibility for Eastleigh building collapse

Structural engineer Joseph Muturi Mugu has formally disputed responsibility for the collapse of a building under construction in the Eastleigh area of Nairobi, Kenya. The incident occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, along 9th Street.

Mugu, through his legal representatives at Bedan Njeri & Company Advocates, maintains that his involvement was limited to preparing structural designs for a proposed 15-storey development. He asserts that after handing the designs to the developer for submission and approval, he never received an approval code and did not perform any further professional services on the project.

The dispute follows a press statement from the National Construction Authority (NCA) that identified Mugu as the structural engineer of record for the development. In response, Mugu’s legal team has demanded that the NCA provide certified copies of project registration applications, structural drawings, calculations, and design reports. They are also seeking audit trails and electronic submission records to determine how and when his professional details were entered into the Authority’s records.
