Engineering education enrolments rise in India

Engineering education in India is seeing significant growth in both professional enrolments and student admissions. Data from College Vidya indicates that B. Tech enrolments for working diploma holders grew by 53% between the 2023-24 and 2025-26 academic periods. This growth is largely driven by professionals aged 26–35 seeking to advance their careers through flexible education. Notably, core engineering disciplines account for 76% of these enrolments, with Civil engineering leading at 29%, followed by Mechanical at 23%.

In Maharashtra, total engineering admissions across 387 colleges rose to 181,927 students for the 2026-27 academic year, an increase of over 15,000 compared to the previous year. While regional data from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar shows a strong student preference for computer engineering, information technology, and artificial intelligence, state-wide trends show massive numbers in computer engineering (28,170 admissions) and mechanical engineering (19,702 admissions). Pune remains the leading district for engineering admissions in the state.
