Engineering students report lower mental health distress and treatment use
A study utilizing data from the 2021–2022 Healthy Minds Study indicates that undergraduate engineering students report lower rates of mental health distress and treatment use compared to students in other academic fields when controlling for sociodemographic factors.
Despite these lower reported rates, 44.4% of undergraduate engineering students screened positive for current depression and/or anxiety. Among those who screened positive, only 40.4% had received therapy or counseling within the past year. Additionally, engineering students were the least likely to receive a formal diagnosis for depression or anxiety compared to their peers in other disciplines.
