Engineering Theses in Peru and Ecuador Focus on Soil Mechanics and 5S Productivity
A 2024 thesis from the Universidad Nacional Daniel Alcides Carrión examined the mechanical properties of soils in Racracancha, Pasco, Peru, to determine suitable foundation designs for sports infrastructure. The study identified cohesion, internal friction angle, and specific weight as key factors influencing bearing capacity and recommended square footings with a capacity of 0.85 kg/cm².
A separate research project at the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana evaluated the implementation of the 5S methodology at the Ecuadorian fiberglass manufacturer Omegafibras. The initiative raised the 5S audit score from 48 to 75 and increased productivity by 13.7%, demonstrating the method’s effectiveness in enhancing operational efficiency and fostering a culture of organization and continuous improvement.
