Engineers Warn of Building Collapse Risks in Mexico and Venezuela
Geologist Arturo Sotelo Rodríguez reported that numerous homes and commercial properties across several municipalities in Aguascalientes, Mexico, show severe cracks and subsidence that could lead to sudden collapses, especially after heavy rains. He cited houses built on an active fault line and warned that authorities have ignored the danger, leaving families of adults and children at risk.
Civil engineer Leonardo Diogo highlighted similar safety concerns in Caracas, Venezuela, where buildings damaged by the June 24 earthquakes suffer widespread water infiltration. He explained that leaks threaten structural steel, while a lack of coordination among condo owners hinders necessary repairs, jeopardizing the recovery of the city's housing stock.
