England and Wales to implement specialist rape courts
The UK government has announced a plan to roll out specialist courts for rape and serious sexual offences across England and Wales over the next two years. Under the initiative, every Crown Court will be equipped with at least one dedicated courtroom to handle these cases.
Key measures include providing victims with private entrances and separate waiting rooms to prevent contact with defendants. Court staff will undergo trauma-informed training, and each survivor will be assigned a single point of contact. Additionally, courts will utilize technology to allow for the pre-recording of evidence and remote observation of sentencing.
To address lengthy delays, the government will move from floating trial lists to assigning fixed dates for trials starting in October. The reform package, funded by a £23 million allocation from the Ministry of Justice budget, aims to tackle low prosecution rates and reduce the significant backlogs that have left victims waiting years for justice. The announcement follows public testimony from Labour MP Charlotte Nichols regarding her own experience with court delays.
