England announces plan to increase organic farmland to 10% by 2036

The UK government has announced a new Organic Action Plan aimed at significantly increasing the share of organic farmland in England. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) intends to grow the proportion of land dedicated to organic farming from approximately 3.4% to nearly 10% by 2036.

Presented by Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle, the plan seeks to align domestic production with rising consumer demand and reduce reliance on imports. The organic food retail market in the UK was valued at over £3.9 billion in 2025. To achieve these targets, the government will focus on supporting both existing and new organic producers and processors, improving supply chains, and enhancing market access for British organic goods.

Key initiatives include providing consultancy and practical advice to farmers considering a transition to organic methods, as well as exploring increased use of organic products in public procurement, such as for schools and hospitals. The plan was developed in collaboration with the English Organic Forum (EOF). While the strategy outlines extensive support and structural improvements, it does not announce a new, specific dedicated subsidy fund.
