England coach Thomas Tuchel's right‑back dilemma ahead of World Cup last‑16

Former England defender Gary Neville warned that Thomas Tuchel’s inability to find a settled right‑back could jeopardise England’s progress at the World Cup. Injuries to regular right‑backs Reece James and Tino Livramento have forced Tuchel to use a rotating selection that has included Declan Rice, Trevoh Chalobah and others, and Neville suggested Rice’s continued deployment at right‑back may become costly.

Former striker Gary Lineker echoed concerns over England’s midfield balance and also backed the idea of Rice at right‑back, proposing that Kobbie Mainoo replace Elliot Anderson in midfield to give a steadier shape. Both pundits highlighted the upcoming round‑of‑16 clash with Mexico after England’s 2‑1 win over DR Congo, noting the tactical tweaks needed to avoid further problems.

The discussion comes as England prepare for the Mexico City stadium match on 5 July, with the outcome potentially influencing a quarter‑final meeting against Brazil or Norway.
