England cricket under pressure as former captain urges coach resignation

England’s cricket team has faced a wave of criticism after veteran all‑rounder Ben Stokes announced his retirement, coinciding with a 160‑run defeat to New Zealand that handed the side a 2‑1 series loss. The loss left England seventh in the ICC Test rankings, having secured only two victories in their last ten Test matches, a slump that also extends to the limited‑overs formats.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan called for decisive change, saying on the Stick to Cricket podcast that he has “seen enough”. Vaughan urged head coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key to resign, questioning their ability to lift the team to the top‑spot and describing the current coaching set‑up as “not being well coached”. He highlighted the team’s poor results on sub‑standard pitches and urged fans and stakeholders to demand new leadership.

Vaughan’s comments add pressure on the coaching hierarchy, which has overseen the appointment of McCullum as Test coach in 2022 and his expansion to all formats in 2024, as well as Key’s takeover of the cricket director role from Ashley Giles in 2022.
