England FA to appeal Jarell Quansah red card after FIFA Balogun ruling
The English Football Association (FA) is examining an appeal against the red card shown to defender Jarell Quansah in England's 3‑2 Round‑of‑16 victory over Mexico at the 2026 World Cup. Quansah was dismissed in the 54th minute for a serious foul on Jesús Gallardo and faces an automatic one‑match suspension.
The appeal is prompted by FIFA’s earlier decision to defer the suspension of U.S. forward Folarin Balogun after intervention by U.S. President Donald Trump, raising questions about consistent application of disciplinary rules. British Labour MPs Noah Law and Melanie Onn wrote to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, stating, “while I believe it was right for Jarell Quansah to have received his red card… it would be right to delay his suspension until after the tournament.”
UEFA and other national federations have also criticised the Balogun precedent. With England preparing for a quarter‑final against Norway, the FA seeks clarification from FIFA on the legal basis of the Balogun decision and the possibility of invoking Article 27 of the disciplinary code to postpone Quansah’s ban.
